An old or damaged consumer unit (sometimes called a fuseboard or fuse box) is one of the most common reasons an electrical installation fails an EICR. A modern consumer unit provides far better protection for your home and family, with individual circuit protection that isolates faults without cutting power to the whole property.
Modern consumer units are metal-clad to contain any internal fire, and use RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overload) protection on individual circuits. This means if a fault occurs on one circuit — a kitchen socket, for example — only that circuit trips, rather than the entire house losing power. It's safer, more convenient, and makes fault identification far easier.
A consumer unit replacement is typically completed in a day. The existing unit is safely isolated, the new unit is installed and each circuit is connected, tested and labelled. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and the work is notified to Building Regulations through NICEIC. Your power is restored the same day.
